Streeterville real estate

Between the Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan, north of the river and south of East Lake Shore Drive, lies the Streeterville neighborhood. The John Hancock tower, Chicago’s Water Tower, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Navy Pier and Olive Park are among the better-known Streeterville landmarks. Three world-class universities have their Chicago campuses in Streeterville – Northwestern University, University of Chicago and Loyola.

Streeterville real estateLegend has it that ‘Cap’ Streeter ran his houseboat aground on a sandbar in 1886 and upon discovering that the land was not technically part of Illinois, claimed it as his own, hence the name Streeterville.

You’ll find many Streeterville luxury condo and apartment towers, both vintage and newly built. There are few townhomes in Streeterville’s newer complexes, primarily in River East. Single-family homes are practically non-existent. Condos can be had for as little as $200,000 up to the multiple millions, especially near the tops of the high-rises. Rentals start at around $1000 for a studio apartment and run the gamut to the truly luxurious.

There are landmarks galore in Streeterville, including two Historic Districts. The Old Chicago Water Tower District contains the only public buildings that survived the Chicago Fire of 1871. The East Lake Shore Drive Historic District is at the north end of Streeterville and includes several vintage high-rise buildings on and near East Lake Shore Drive, which some would claim is in the Gold Coast. Streeterville’s mile plus of Lake Michigan shoreline is dominated by the Chicago Lakefront Path, and flanked at either end by two of Chicago’s most popular attractions – Oak Street Beach on the north and Navy Pier and Olive Park at the south end.

Shopping, dining, nightlife, museums, and outdoor spaces – it’s all in Streeterville. The Magnificent Mile is a world-wide shopping destination. Luxury hotels are abundant. The lakefront draws thousands to Streeterville every day for a casual walk on the lakefront to a day of festivities at Navy Pier. Dining options are endless – from the casual to the ultra-elegant. Nothing says Chicago like dinner and cocktails at the Signature Room on the 95th floor of the John Hancock building.
