Cragin Community Info
Cragin is a quiet, large, commercially built residential neighborhood located on the Chicago’s Westside, 8 miles from the Loop. A wide range of homes, from bungalows, two-flats and Cape Cods can be found near shopping centers and restaurants. A population of over 78,000 residents makes up the ethnically diverse Cragin.
Historically this community has been friendly to commerce, having gained an early reputation as Whiskey Point, with a saloon was established in the 1830s. In the late 1800s, Cragin Brothers & Company located their tin plate and sheet iron processing plant near Whiskey Point and a railway station was built to accommodate all their employees. A bustling economy and job opportunities brought an influx of residents. More industry followed and the town grew quickly, resulting in a population of over 60,000 by 1920.
