Chicago’s Austin Neighborhood Homes and Community
The Austin Neighborhood located on the west side of Chicago is one the largest community areas by land area. It includes several distinctive areas including Midway Park, a historic district of restored 19th century residences , Galewood and the Island., which is a square mile in the far southwest corner of Austin.
The Austin neighborhood is bordered by the suburbs of Cicero to the south and Oak Park to the west and is isolated from other residential area in the city by the Eisenhower Expressway and Columbus Park and an industrial area. Henry Austin created the Austin subdivision and was a wealthy businessman and real estate speculator. Austin was originally within the township of Cicero and in 1899 was annexed to Chicago.
